Master of International Relations

If you work for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and want to upgrade your competencies and acquire new ones, then this programme is for you!

– If you work in a central state authority and deal with issues related to the implementation of international cooperation, then this programme is for you! This could be for example questions of foreign economic policy, trade and economic policy, integration cooperation and questions of attracting investments. Bilateral and multilateral cooperation in health, education and science, industry and infrastructure development, regulation of religious activities, youth and family policy, civil society, information and media, etc. If the issues listed above are part of your job responsibilities, you may apply for the competition.

 Not only the centre, but also the regions are involved in the implementation of state foreign policy. These are issues of development of the region’s export and import potential, its innovation infrastructure, investment attraction, interregional and integration relations, cross-border cooperation, tourism, etc. And if you are an employee of a local public authority and are involved in international cooperation, this programme is for you!
– Also, if you are a foreign civil servant (foreign policy officer of your country), you have the opportunity to apply for a grant to study at the Institute of Diplomacy for a Master’s degree program “International Relations”. For instance, the Institute has hosted diplomats from Afghanistan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkey and Ukraine for the grant programme in different years. This academic year, master’s students from Afghanistan are preparing to graduate.

Features and benefits of the programme
Individual learning trajectory based on competence assessment results. After enrolment, you will undergo an assessment – a comprehensive assessment based on modelling key moments of activity, to identify the level of development of professionally important qualities (competences) and determine your potential. Based on the results of the assessment, an individual learning path will be selected for you, focusing on the development of specific competences.
Teachers are experienced professionals and practitioners, including serving and retired diplomats.
 
The Institute is especially proud of its professors, who are experienced international experts and practitioners. Among these are T.S. Suleimenov, the first Minister of Foreign Affairs of independent Kazakhstan. The Institute is regularly supported by ambassadors at large and heads of departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other government agencies. Foreign lecturers also teach at the Institute. For example, International Conflict Studies in English is taught by Dr. Gerhard Sailer, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Austria to Kazakhstan in 2016-2020, Head of the Department of the Austrian Foreign Ministry.
  • In-depth language training:Professional English for International Relations – if successfully mastered, possibility of TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) certification;
  • French for Diplomats – if you have successfully completed the DELF (Diplome d’etudes en langue Française) certification.
  • Additionally you will have the opportunity to take a basic course in Spanish from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Colombia, which is facilitated by the RK Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as a course in Turkish, which is organised annually at the Academy by the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Kazakhstan. 
  • Participation in international forums and conferences, regular meetings with ambassadors and heads of foreign diplomatic missions in the form of “Ambassador’s hours”.
  • Internships and practice at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan and other state bodies, the opportunity to undertake overseas internships at the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Kazakhstan and leading diplomatic schools.
  • The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan is a partner in the implementation of the programme.
  • Foreign partners: the Diplomatic Academy Wien (the Diplomatische Akademie Wien – Vienna School of International Studies); the Emirates Diplomatic Academy and other leading diplomatic schools.
